On the 20th of May, this year, we held our first quarterly workshop in Cape Town. This one was focused on emotional intelligence. More often than not, this quadrant plays an even larger role than our intellect – especially in the workplace. As Releasing Eagles, we strive to build leaders and teach on how to live holistic, balanced lives. The speaker at this workshop was none other than our very own founder, Candice Booysen.
She described emotional intelligence as the ability to identify, use, understand and manage our own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. Great focus is placed on REACTING versus RESPONDING. This entire workshop was interactive. Thoughts and opinions were shared openly. Reacting to a situation is fed by a ton of emotion. Very little thought is given in the moment. It is an immediate, impulsive action. When responding to a situation, it means that one has taken time out to reflect, removing ones emotions, and perhaps even reasoning, before feedback is given. One of the mentors used a bottle of soda and a bottle of water as a metaphor for this exact concept. He said, when shaking a bottle of soda, upon opening it, it explodes. He then mentioned that when shaking a bottle of water, upon opening it, you’re able to manage/control how it flows out of the bottle. This was a profound analogy that none of us will forget.
During our break, we were served a very well prepared lunch, catered for by Tracy Constant. She blew us away with what she had prepared. There was enough for us to regain our energy before the second part of the workshop commenced.
The workshop was held at a very spacious lecture hall at the University of the Western Cape. Surprisingly, the venue was just the right capacity to accommodate all of us. The next workshop may just require a bigger venue, if Releasing Eagles keeps growing at this rate. We welcome GROWTH with open arms and hearts!
We are extremely excited for our next workshop in Cape Town, which will be taking place on the 22nd of July. This one will be focused on Financial Intelligence and the simplicity of budgeting. We hope to see you there!
